What Are Marker Lights and Why Do They Matter?

Marker lights (also called clearance lights or side marker lights) are the small colored lights mounted on the sides, front, and rear of a semi truck and trailer. Federal regulations require them to define the width and length of your vehicle — making you visible to other drivers, especially at night and in poor weather.

Upgrading from incandescent to LED marker lights is one of the smartest investments a truck owner can make. LEDs are brighter, last longer, draw less power, and look dramatically cleaner than yellowed factory lights.

DOT Color Requirements

The Department of Transportation mandates specific colors for each marker light position:

• Front clearance lights: Amber
• Side marker lights (front half of vehicle): Amber
• Side marker lights (rear half of vehicle): Red
• Rear clearance lights: Red
• Cab identification lights: Amber (top of cab, required for vehicles over 80" wide)

Marker Light Shapes and Sizes

Rectangular (Most Common)

Standard rectangular markers are the most widely used. Available in various sizes — 2"x6", 2"x4", and 1"x4" are the most common. These mount with two screws on the side of the cab, fender, or trailer body.

Oval

Oval markers are popular on newer aerodynamic trucks. They typically mount in a recessed grommet for a flush, clean appearance.

Round

2" and 2.5" round markers are used in certain positions, especially on trailers. They're also popular as accent lights along frame rails and bumpers.

Torpedo / Bullet

Torpedo-style markers mount on a stud and are common on classic trucks like the Peterbilt 389 and Kenworth W900. They add a traditional look to cab and fender positions.

LED Technology Options

Standard LED

Individual LED diodes behind a colored lens. Most affordable option, solid brightness, available in every color. Good for basic replacements.

High-Flux LED

Larger LED chips that produce more light per diode. Brighter than standard LEDs with better light distribution. Moderate price increase.

Sequential / Dynamic LED

LEDs that light up in sequence (sweeping pattern) when activated. Creates an eye-catching effect, especially on side markers. Popular for show trucks and custom builds. Check state regulations — some states restrict animated lighting.

Installation Basics

LED marker lights are one of the simplest truck upgrades to install:

1. Remove old light: Unscrew the lens or housing, disconnect the wiring
2. Check wiring: LED markers have two wires — positive (power) and negative (ground). Match them to the existing wiring. Reverse polarity won't damage most modern LEDs but the light won't illuminate.
3. Mount new light: Secure with the provided screws or insert into the grommet
4. Seal: Apply a thin bead of silicone around the mounting surface to prevent moisture intrusion
5. Test: Turn on the running lights and verify each marker illuminates correctly

Common Issues and Fixes

• Hyperflash (fast blinking): Some trucks flash LED markers too fast because they draw less power. Install a load equalizer or LED-compatible flasher relay to fix this.
• Dim or uneven brightness: Check the ground connection. A poor ground is the number one cause of dim LEDs.
• Water intrusion: If moisture gets behind the lens, check the gasket and sealant. Replace the gasket and reseal with silicone.
